Launch of Two New Sections and Updates to the NNERPP RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse


Greetings, NNERPP community!


We are excited to share two new sections of curated content and updates to previous collections on the NNERPP RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse, in order to support your research-practice partnership (RPP) efforts!

You may recall that we first launched the RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse last year as an up-to-date repository of resources for those interested in RPPs. By systematically collecting, organizing, and synthesizing the numerous pieces of knowledge on education research-practice partnerships that have been produced by leaders in the field, the Clearinghouse leverages the collective wisdom around RPP work within topic-specific sections.


Building The Foundation: Updates

In our initial launch of the Clearinghouse, we focused on curating resources that mainly serve individuals just starting their RPP efforts. “Building The Foundation” has seen a few updates since then that we’d like to share, including a reorganization of the landing page to better guide visitors to the site. In particular, we’ve laid out three new categories that should better guide you to what you are looking for:

Making It Work + Special Topics: Launch

We proposed two additional sections during our initial launch, “Making It Work” and “Continuous Improvement,” that would be released at a future date. Based on our current assessment of topic interests from the field, you’ll notice that we’ve tweaked these slightly.

Here’s what you can now find in our two new sections:


Making it Work is still aimed at those who are currently working in an RPP and are interested in resources related to the improvement of their RPPs. In support of that goal, this section provides resources related to “Communication and Engagement in RPPs” and we’ve now added resources related to assessing effectiveness of RPPs in this section as well. Further topic areas will be added in the future — if you have suggestions, drop us a line!

TheSpecial Topics section provides curated collections of resources by special interest topic. Our first special topic collection is all about the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the role of RPPs in supporting ESSA implementation. Further collections will be coming soon, and we very much welcome suggestions on what you’d like to have here!

As you explore the NNERPP RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse, you might also notice our fresh new look and other updates added since we first launched (for example, the addition of useful #keywords to each listed resource, for further ease of use). We also invite you to help the Clearinghouse stay current by submitting your own work via the “Do you have resources to add? Submit here!” buttons located at the bottom of each page.

Greetings, NNERPP community! We are so thrilled to officially announce and launch Phase I of our newest efforts in spreading knowledge around all-things-RPPs, the NNERPP RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse! In this blog post, we’d like to share the intention behind the Clearinghouse, a few navigational tips to help get you acquainted with this new resource, and our hopes for the Clearinghouse going forward.

The purpose of the NNERPP RPP Knowledge Clearinghouse is to systematically collect, organize, and synthesize the numerous pieces of knowledge on education research-practice partnerships that are making their way online. In this contribution, we integrate across several resources in order to incorporate as much relevant knowledge as

possible. Resources vary by type, including reading materials, “doing” materials such as templates or model examples, and videos. Additionally, we have made a special effort to present the work in a user-focused orientation.

The intended audience for the Knowledge Clearinghouse includes those who are interested in launching an RPP or are currently working in an RPP. With this in mind, we’ve organized the entry into the Clearinghouse across three main topic areas based on these two different audience strands:


For those that are brand new to education RPPs:  We recommend you start here, if this describes your current RPP efforts. “Building the Foundation” is organized into nine general topic areas that we at NNERPP have frequently addressed when fielding phone calls and informational meetings with those interested in getting into this work. Resources in this collection include, for example, defining research-practice partnerships, discussing differences in RPP arrangements, addressing funding and staffing concerns, as well as considering other important infrastructure necessary to get the work going.

For those that are currently working in an RPP, part I (coming soon!) We recommend you start here, if this describes your current RPP efforts, once we’ve launched Phase II. The “Making It Work” section of the clearinghouse is targeted towards those that have experience working in an RPP and would like to develop and refine their current efforts. Resources in this collection will build on those contained in “Building the Foundation” and furthermore, include additional topics such as addressing the sustainability of RPPs.

For those that are currently working in an RPP, part II (coming soon!) This final section is also geared towards those that have worked or are currently working in an RPP, but have more extensive experience. The “Continuous Improvement” section of the collection will focus exclusively on several aspects related to the effectiveness of RPPs. For example, questions that pertain to what it means to be “successful” and strategies that will contribute to the continuous improvement of the RPP will be discussed and supported with resources.

Finally, our goal is for the Knowledge Clearinghouse to stay current by updating it regularly with new and exciting resources contributed to the field. While we will make every effort to achieve this, we also invite you to help us by submitting your own work via the buttons located on each resources page (example below).

Houston to House New National Education Organization

Administrators who run school districts and academic researchers who study them would seem to be natural partners. The former are in a position to enact policies that lead to better results for students. The latter can provide valuable research that shows which policies and practices work best.

Despite that seemingly strong fit, the truth is historically, collaboration between these two sides hasn’t been strong. In fact, their relationship is often strained.

As we’ve written before, school districts and universities have cultural differences, and their leaders often lack experience forging partnerships with each other. As a result, it can be difficult for the two groups to collaborate, even though their work should complement each other.

That’s about to change.

Today, we’re announcing the creation of a new entity within the Kinder Institute for Urban Research that will bring school district leaders and education researchers together in an effort to improve outcomes for students – and in particular, those who are economically disadvantaged.

It’s the first organization of its kind. We’re calling it the National Education Research-Practice Partnerships Network, or NERPP.

Already, the network includes partnerships between school systems and research institutions in a dozen cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Most are relatively new partnerships.

“There are professional organizations out there for education researchers — but there aren’t as many for district leaders, and there are none for education researchers and school district leaders working together,” said Ruth N. López Turley, associate director of the Kinder Institute and founder of NERPP.

Turley noted that typically, national education organizations are housed in the East Coast. In NERPP, Houston will get a unique opportunity to host national education leaders on a regular basis.

Beginning in 2011, the Kinder Institute and the Houston Independent School District began working together through a partnership called the Houston Education Research Consortium.

That effort has provided valuable insights to HISD, shedding light on which bilingual programs work best, whether a specialized reading program is effective, and how parents choose schools.

The network will allow similar partnerships across the country to learn from each other. “We’re not the first, and we’ve learned a lot from others, just as others have learned from us,” Turley said.

“The time was right to develop a national network to facilitate the work researchers and district leaders are doing so we can all learn from one another and improve the connection between research and policy,” Turley added.

NERPP is supported by generous grants from organizations including the William T. Grant Foundation ($300,000), the Laura and John Arnold Foundation ($200,000), the Wallace Foundation ($150,000), and the Annie E. Case Foundation ($50,000).

The $700,000 in grant funding will allow the Kinder Institute to hire a national coordinator and a program manager to oversee NERPP. It will also support comparative research that examines education issues of interest to many districts.

The announcement of the NERPP network coincides with our second annual forum for the network’s members. This week, we’re hosting officials who participate in school district-university partnerships across the nation. Each partnership is sending both university and school district representatives.

The forum will highlight the best ways to help these partnerships thrive, including how to develop a joint research agenda, how to share data, and how to apply research-based knowledge. It will also highlight findings and trends those partnerships have already identified, including conversations with foundations, government leaders, and researchers who study these partnerships.

“It’s great to bring people here who study these partnerships with the aim of advancing their mission, which aligns with that of the Kinder Institute,” Turley said.

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research has hired a director for the newly formed National Education Research-Practice Partnerships (NERPP) – a network of research institutions and public school districts that have partnered to connect education research and policy in about 13 cities nationwide.

Dr. Paula Arce-Trigatti will serve as the director of NERPP, effective Jan. 1. Arce-Trigatti currently serves as a post-doctoral fellow at Tulane University’s Education Research Alliance, which studies New Orleans schools and provides guidance on which policies work best for its students. She earned a master’s in applied economics from Florida State University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Houston.

“I’m excited this organization is happening,” Arce-Trigatti said of NERPP. “There’s an immense need for it. The network can transmit knowledge, learning, and best practices, and get them to the people who are trying to improve schools.”

In communities across the country, urban school districts and research institutions are pooling their resources and skills to help improve their understanding of which strategies yield the best results in public schools.

Building off of earlier efforts to connect partnerships across the country, the Kinder Institute helped to form NERPP earlier this year to develop existing school district-research institution partnerships and help form new ones. Cities that are already participating in the NERPP network include Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Newark, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

The network is funded by grants from several foundations including: the William T. Grant Foundation ($300,000); the Laura & John Arnold Foundation ($200,000); the Wallace Foundation ($150,000); and the Annie E. Casey Foundation ($50,000).

“I am thrilled that Paula will be the first director of NERPP,” said Professor Ruth López Turley, associate director of research at the Kinder Institute. “She has great management skills, and she is an excellent communicator with both academic researchers and district leaders. She understands these partnerships well and has great ideas for how the national network will support and develop them.”

Historically, administrators who run public school districts and academic researchers who study them have not always collaborated closely. In recent years, however, those relationships have been improving. Since 2011, research institution-school district research partnerships have met regularly to discuss their findings. But until NERPP was created, there was no formal mechanism by which they could collaborate.

By choosing Arce-Trigatti to direct NERPP, the network ensures that its leader is someone who is already very familiar with the work of research institution-school district partnerships. At Tulane’s Education Research Alliance, Arce-Trigatti’s research has focused on how schools respond in a market-based schooling system. The organization’s research on reforms of the New Orleans school systems in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has been widely cited by researchers and the media.

In its first year, NERPP will focus on recruiting partnerships for membership, identifying liaisons from each partnership, and hosting a national meeting so members can share research and best practices. NERPP will also work to support the creation of new partnerships in cities that currently lack them and develop a framework for conducting and sharing comparative research across school systems.

“I like to connect ideas and people,” Arce-Trigatti said. “This network is helping to support that knowledge transfer.”
